Truth Be Told: “Behind the Set”
Al Jarreau is pleasant, easy going, and as animated as one will bear witness to when you watch our interview. He generated so much of a good time, as well as an exorbitant amount of fun, from the minute he walked onto the set until the time he left.
There are those artists who – upon finishing their evening performance – wish to do the least amount of socializing and/or publicity, opting to go about with their own agenda. Al couldn’t have been more agreeable to whatever we requested.
As you will see at the beginning of our segment, he was very complimentary, and his quote follows: “Your program here… I don’t know anyone who is doing anything like this.”
If you love Jazz, I trust you will find our conversation immensely interesting.
Lastly, for the end of the segment, I thought I would ask Al to sing a portion of the song “Route 66” as he does on his CD “Yes I Can”. He does it a’ cappella style. Truth be told, not only did he sing a portion, but when one of the cameramen cued us, letting us know that was all of the song needed for the credit roll, Al and I were having such a great time (he sang while I was drumming on the table next to me), we kept going until the end of the tune. At the end of the jam, Al and I just crack up. Not a second of any of that was planned.
